Redecorating your space can be fun and refreshing–especially with Spring approaching. With so many ideas online, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by pieces that look like they go together, but don’t quite look right in your space. One trick interior designers turn to when laying out a space is a principle of design: balance.

Balance can help you determine where something “goes”. Whether you’ve purchased a new piece of furniture, or you’re just adding in a new lamp, balance can guide your design decisions.

There are three primary types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial. Symmetrical balance refers to mirroring over a central axis, while asymmetrical has more to do with weight. Radial balance means a room is arranged around a central point to evoke centrifugal motion.

Arranging A Small Living Room

If you have a small living room, here are several ways to utilize your space so that you don’t feel cramped, yet you can fit everything in one spot. Here are some tips on arranging a small living room:

Go with a Loveseat

A loveseat is typically shorter than a sofa is, so that can be a huge space saver. Loveseats can also be paired with a great ottoman like this England Furniture Betty Storage Ottoman (pictured). It is compact, and you can store away anything from blankets to board games. Furniture with storage built in is another way to utilize your space effectively.

Mirrors

Mirrors positioned opposite to windows or hallways can make a space feel bigger than it actually is. It brings more light in to a room and has the effect of creating more space.

Before you start arranging, use painter’s tape to outline where you want furniture to go—this will save you a considerable amount of effort as you start rearranging.

For the Love of Trunks

There are nearly endless uses for old leather traveling trunks! They are nostalgic, functional and oh so classy.

If you don’t have an older family member who might very well have one, check out some garage sales, thrift shops, or antique shops. They may not come in perfect condition, but a little TLC will take care of that.

  1. Find a trunk that fits the space you have.
  2. Don’t worry about broken handles, they are easy to replace and sometimes look fine as they are. Remember you’re not traveling with them, just showing them off.
  3. Reject any that have signs of mold. It may not be worth the trouble.
  4. It may take a few tries to find your gem, but shopping for one is half the fun!
  5. Once you find one you love, wipe it down inside and outside with a damp rag.
  6. If you want to deepen the color, you can use furniture polish or stain.
  7. It’s likely to be a bit musty so place a small bowl of bleach on top of a towel on the bottom of the trunk and then close it and let it sit overnight. Make sure no one knocks into it – you don’t want to spill the bleach.
  8. In the morning, dispose of the bowl of bleach and let it air out for the rest of the day.
  9. If the inside needs a new liner, peel off the old and pick up a cool patterned liner that fits your style.
  10. Once it’s clean and ready you can use the trunk as a: coffee table, storage for blankets, pillows, toys, books, firewood… oh, the possibilities are endless!

  • A bulb could be the culprit of harsh lighting, so consider a simple change of wattage or bulb type to get that light just right.

The term “living room” can mean a number of different things to different people. For some, a living room is an informal and social space for everyday living – the room with the comfiest sofas, biggest television. The room where everyone relaxes day-to-day.

Here are some ideas which can be used in both types of living room:

Adorn Your Walls With Your Own Style

Choose the style that’s right for the room which will serve as your social space. If modern is more your style, then white or off-white walls, clean lines and curves, a small number of meaningful minimalist art, and photographs in sleek lacquered frames might be more to your liking. If traditional is more your style, then art and photographs in classic wood frames against a more darkly colored wall or darkly hued wooden panels may be more suitable to your comfort level.

Everything Must Compliment Everything

If you are going with a particular style on the walls, make sure that your furniture colors are mutually complimentary. The style, of course, is important. But not as important as keeping the color scheme correct. An older style of sofa can look modern in a modern styled room if the colors go together properly. Pillows, throws, and carpets should all go with the theme of the room, as set by the wall coverings.

Create a Focal Point

To help anchor the room, there should be some sort of a focal point. If television is a large part of your use of your living room, consider a large piece of art, a sculpture, or large dry flower arrangements on either side.
