Three Easy Ways to Welcome Springtime Indoors

Letting that warm springtime feeling inside after a cold winter is one of the best parts of the seasons changing. Welcome the sunshine indoors by refreshing your space. Spring cleaning is more than just dusting—think about starting the new season with a better living room furniture set!

1. Clean
Spring cleaning can become a fun family tradition. Get some music playing, assign tasks, and get the whole family in a cleaning competition!

2. Use Your Green Thumb
Add some plants into your space. Humans are naturally drawn to nature, and adding a vivacious green plant—real or fake—can help bring the budding branches indoors.

3. Furniture Update
Store away heavy blankets and transition into the light, airy feeling of spring. Swap out those dark, heavy curtains with light, sheer ones! If you are considering a new piece of furniture, you will want one that can easily transition through all seasons. The light gray upholstery on this England Furniture Monroe Sectional (pictured) can look chic in any season.

Creating Balance in Interior Design

Redecorating your space can be fun and refreshing–especially with Spring approaching. With so many ideas online, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by pieces that look like they go together, but don’t quite look right in your space. One trick interior designers turn to when laying out a space is a principle of design: balance.

Balance can help you determine where something “goes”. Whether you’ve purchased a new piece of furniture, or you’re just adding in a new lamp, balance can guide your design decisions.

There are three primary types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial. Symmetrical balance refers to mirroring over a central axis, while asymmetrical has more to do with weight. Radial balance means a room is arranged around a central point to evoke centrifugal motion.

Pictured here is a great example of asymmetrical balance. You can see how the weight of the room is balanced out by a small side table and a tall, skinny lamp. The Malibu sectional’s chaise balances with the other side of the sofa.

Adding a Pop of Color to Your Living Room

How to add a pop of color to your living room, living room with green accents

Adding a bright, happy color to the living room can create a positive atmosphere in your home. Breathing a bit of life into your home during these gray winter days is as simple as incorporating a pop of color into the living room. Here are a few ways to do this:

Pillows

Brightly colored pillows, like the ones on this Chandler Sectional by England Furniture, are simple details that can make a huge difference. Pillows can be an inexpensive update to a room, and if you’re handy, you can even reupholster pillows by hand.

Accent Furniture

Accent chairs and ottomans, like England Furniture’s Kinnett Chair or the small Hollie Storage Ottoman, can add an interesting dimension into a room by introducing a whole new vibe. To have an accent piece blend into a room, it’s important to integrate that color throughout other parts of the room so that it doesn’t stick out.

Art

Adding striking art to the walls helps to make the room look more complete. Whether you opt for larger scale paintings or smaller framed water colors, pieces of art can add a splash of color to a wall without having to paint. You can also add vases tucked in a corner or prominently displayed on an end table or coffee table.

Five Autumn Interior Design Tips

England Furniture Autumn Design Tips
Autumn interior design conjures images of wooden twigs, colorful leaves, pumpkins and gourds, and endless hues of yellows, browns, greens, oranges and reds. All these natural colors and elements can create a warm autumn interior.  While autumn is a wonderful time to consider some new furniture offerings for your home, England Furniture knows you don’t need to buy all new furniture to celebrate the autumnal season.   Consider these autumn interior design tips from the England Furniture Company.

Welcome Autumn!

Let everyone know that you welcome the season of Fall with a beautiful, autumn-inspired wreath on your front door.  Simple grapevine wreaths are a simple way to go.  If you desire something more ornate, add leaves, pine cones, corn husks, or berries on your wreath.  Use white pumpkins if you want to add a touch of elegance.

Use your Fireplace

Simply using your fireplace during autumn is a wonderful way to add warmth to your room, figuratively and literally! Help to bring in that autumnal feel by adding leaves, pine cones, pumpkins, gourds, or fall-inspired colored candles on your fireplace mantle.  Before lighting your first fire, be sure the chimney has been cleaned and inspected.  Safety first!

Blankets Galore

Another great way to add some warmth to your room is to add throw blankets into the area.  Place fall colored throw blankets on couches, sofas, loveseats, and chairs.  Compliment your blankets with throw pillows to create a cozy, autumn environment.

Off to the Woods

Wood isn’t only good for a fire, it’s decorative!  Bring in wooden elements to give your room a true, organic, natural feel.  Remove any leaves or small twigs and brush-off the wood to make sure you’re not bringing in any unwanted guests (bugs or spiders…yikes!)

Pumpkins, Gourds, and Mums…Oh My!

It wouldn’t be autumn without the use of pumpkins, gourds, and mums.   There are countless DIY crafts available (we love votive candles in small carved out pumpkins and mums planted inside large pumpkins on the front porch).  If you don’t have much time to be creative, simply pick up some of these items and strategically place them on your front porch, the fireplace mantel, your coffee table, and your dining room table.  Add some vines, pine cones, and/or leaves to bring all the elements together.

Creating a Kid-Friendly Living Room

Having children in your home is true blessing, but it can also be a challenge.  While your interior design choices used to be about aesthetics, when kids are involved, you also need to think about practicality and safety. Kids move around fast and can cause a room to quickly feel cluttered (toys, crafts, more toys, etc!).  Consider these tips from England Furniture on how you can start to create a kid-friendly living room.

Avoid Sharp Edges!

Almost every parent or guardian has had the experience of watching their toddler fall, just nearly missing the corner of that coffee table, end table or TV stand. These items are typically the perfect height for your children to bang their head on so, to create a safer environment, purchase tables with rounded edges.  England Furniture has a wide range of England Furniture tables that you can choose from.

Kid-Friendly Sofas and Couches

Leather couches and sunbrella fabrics are fantastic options when creating a kid-friendly living room.  Leather is great because it wipes clean, it is a tough material, and often looks best once broken in. Darker colored fabrics, as a rule, also tend to wear better than lighter fabrics.  Many professional interior designers also recommend that parents invest in their upholstered furniture by purchasing stain-resistant fabrics.  England Furniture has a wide range of fabrics and leathers to choose from when purchasing living room furniture.

The Perfect Choices for Walls

When considering your wall paint, choose a washable paint sheen.  A paint color in semi-gloss, stain, or eggshell, can be easily cleaned up with some mild soap and a damp rag. If you prefer a matte finish, flat paints have the benefit of touch-up painting, and without the presence of brush marks.

Don’t Forget the Floors

Floors that are easy to clean can be your best friend in a busy kid-filled household! Dirt, spills, and crumbs are going to happen!  Think wood, laminate, tiles, or vinyl.  If you prefer carpet, consider laying down carpet tiles so you can easily replace as needed.

Storage, Storage, and Some More Storage

You can’t have enough places for storage when creating kid-friendly living room so make sure you purchase entertainment centers, bookcases, and tables that provide some places to store all those toys, games, and craft items.  Then think outside of the box by purchasing one of our England Furniture ottomans that open up for more storage.
